The English Premier League is becoming stronger each year with more and more world class players arriving on our shores for exaggerated transfer fees. The blue half of Manchester have become the team to beat this season as more big spending took place this summer following their FA Cup triumph and qualification to the Champions League.
City have been able to finally become a side that looks as if it can win the Premier League ahead of their rivals Manchester United. Roberto Mancini’s side are unbeaten in all English competition coming into the busy Christmas schedule, but a tough game on Wednesday night against Bayern will decide their Champions League fate as they are struggling to qualify for the knock-out rounds.
However, seven wins at home and five wins away; including a 6-1 victory over United; see the Citizens sitting pretty, five points clear at the top of the league. Semi finalists in the Carling Cup, City are still on course for the domestic treble but face their city rivals once again in the third round of the FA Cup in January.
Does this success mean that City are good for English football however?
In my opinion, yes! The world class players that the mega rich Blues have brought to the Premier League have been a joy to watch for a neutral. David Silva and Sergio Aguero have been outstanding signings that have set the English game alight with individual talent and moments of pure genius that is nearly impossible to deal with. Yaya Toure, Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez join the list of world class footballers that grace the Etihad stadium and have taken over as the most exciting team in England.
City have spent almost £500million since being taken over by Sheik Mansour and it may have taken three years, but they now have the complete side. Just because they have spent all of that money does not mean they have dismissed English talent. One thing that is often overlooked with the boo boys of what is happening in Manchester is that they are still producing and playing good home grown players – sticking to their roots, something that would be easy to forget for a foreign owner.
Adam Johnson, Joleon Lescott, Micah Richards, Joe Hart, James Milner and Gareth Barry have all featured heavily for City this season in all competitions and at times over half of their team has been English. It is important to all Citizens fans that local talent is given a chance and unlike teams such as Chelsea and Arsenal; who have fielded full foreign teams in the past; success does not have to be made by the use of non-English players.
Another reason that I feel City’s success could be positive for the English game is that it breaks the domination of United and Chelsea who have traded the Premier League trophy between themselves since 2004, back when Arsenal had a good side. In my opinion, the title race had become boring, two sides in competition with another three sides hoping for a top four finish. But now City have come along and staked their claim for the title, which has resulted in other teams having to respond. Liverpool have found new owners who have splashed the cash in the summer, Spurs have gone from strength to strength by holding on to key players, Arsenal have the most in form striker in the world at the moment and United and Chelsea have invested in the start of a new era at their respective clubs.
Five or six sides can now say that they believe they can beat anyone in the division, with City forcing clubs to become more competitive in all competitions, which can only improve an English clubs chance of winning European silverware. The once boring title race has evolved into a five horse race and if results go well this week, England could have four teams with a realistic chance of Champions League glory.
The Premier League is the most competitive division in the world and with City’s success it can only grow. United will need to improve to keep their fans happy and London has three clubs in competition to be third best in the league currently. City are fast becoming a great side and one that is helping the English game to improve, along with the division attracting superstar players.
