da bwin: As the debate over dangerous tackles rages on, a new discussion seems to have emerged. Is there one rule for the big clubs and one rule for everybody else? Well it would seem that way after watching Jack Wilshere’s nasty lunge on Birmingham’s Nicola Zigic and Gary Neville’s late challenge on Stoke’s Matty Etherington.
da bet esporte: Although Mr Wilshere found himself making the long walk off to the changing rooms there seemed to be little indignation towards the young England international in the press for the following day. However one such journalist, Darren Lewis of the Daily Mirror went against the grain and asserts “The so-called ‘experts’ may insist it was simply mistimed but I have no doubt whatsoever that had that challenge been made by a Stoke player they would have been hung, drawn and quartered.” Thus throwing the debate into full swing
If we cast our minds back to the Taylor-Eduardo saga, Taylor was “vilified – and still gets vilified to this day – people are STILL interviewing Eduardo about ‘that’ tackle. Will people be interviewing Jack Wilshere in a year’s time about his tackle on Zigic?” Most probably not, yet the incident was similar. Has the time not come for us all to be a bit more even handed and stop succumbing to press and media hype?
Darren Lewis’ claims may seem forthright, but in the light of Gary Neville’s performance on Sunday it would seem he may have a point. Neville should be thankful for the manner in which he was relieved from his duties at the weekend. Prior to half time “Gary Neville had already been booked for a foul on Matthew Etherington and when he brought the winger down with another reckless challenge” he must have been surprised with the leniency shown by referee Andre Mariner who let the defender off without a booking once again.
Tony Pulis then waded in and intensified the debate by accusing referees of double standards. Pulis furthermore made claims that there was one rule for the smaller clubs and another for the bigger teams by stating that if it had been one of his Stoke players committing the same fouls then they would have been punished.
The row over ‘one rule the big clubs and another for everybody else’ is by no means a new one. Graham Poll former Premier League referee also had an opinion on the matter and made the point that “Smaller teams often claim that referees favour the bigger clubs in the Premier League and fans always think that Ferguson affects match officials. The incident in the 42nd minute at the Britannia stadium will certainly give credence to those claims.”
