A return to the Premier League is a very distinct possibility for ex-Arsenal star Alexander Hleb. His current club Barcelona have reportedly offered the Belarusian to Fulham and Birmingham for £3 million as the Catalan giants look to recoup a fraction of the £12 million they paid Arsenal for the midfielder’s services. Hleb’s possible return to the Premier League at a cut-price deal shows how far his stock has fallen since his ill-fated move to the Nou Camp.
After three successful seasons at Arsenal, Hleb decided he wanted away from the Emirates stadium and asked Gunner’s boss Arsene Wenger for a transfer. Hleb indicated that he felt unsettled in London and also doubted whether the club match his trophy ambitions. Wenger granted Hleb his wish and he promply joined Barcelona.
At the time, his request outraged Arsenal fans with supporters citing greed as the main motive for him wanting to move. Moreover, given the quality of players at Barcelona’s disposal, Hleb wasn’t likely to be a first-team regular, unlike at Arsenal where he played frequently under Wenger.
And the fans were right. Despite realising his desire to win more trophies (Hleb won the Treble in his first season in Catalonia), he hardly featured in any of Barcelona’s successes that season. As a result of the limited first-team opportunities available at Barcelona, Hleb chose to join his former club Stuttgart on loan for the whole of the 2009/2010 season. However, his lack of confidence followed him to Germany as Hleb had an indifferent second spell at the club, eventually falling out with coach Markus Babbel over his performances.
Since moving to Barcelona, Hleb has spoken about his regret at leaving Arsenal. Hleb has said that “when you mostly sit on the bench, winning titles brings very little joy, while getting to the last eight of the Champions League with Arsenal was unforgettable”.
While at Arsenal, Hleb was a regular starter in Arsene Wenger’s side and was playing the best football of his life. Now, Hleb is desperately seeking a return to England to resurrect his faltering career.
Like many Arsenal players that have gone before, Hleb left the Gunners at the top of his game, only for his move to quickly turn sour. If he had stayed at Arsenal, who knows? He could have had a shot at becoming an Arsenal legend. But now, Hleb joins the ranks as another Arsenal has-been.
