da aposte e ganhe: A week is a long time in football, and who would have thought after Kermogant’s 90th minute winner against Bournemouth, we would have followed that up with two home defeats on the bounce.
As I sit here, Chris Powell’s Charlton are still stuck on 78 points and will be wondering how they have not added to the tally, ahead of what could be classed as a make or break week ahead. A visit to improving Scunthorpe quickly followed up by another of the in-form sides Yeovil travelling to the Valley on Tuesday. This massive seven days is topped off with a trip to the Galpharm to face Huddersfield. These three games could easily destroy our season or quite simply take us all but over the finish line as I pray for the latter in this case.
This weekend sees Charlton travel to Scunthorpe United, who were a respected Championship side for a number of seasons but are currently struggling towards the bottom of League One. In fact they still face somewhat of a battle to ensure they do not follow up last year’s relegation with another again this season
I think it’s fair to say that manager Alan Knill’s reign has not been as successful as he would have hoped after leaving his impressive Bury team to take on the role at Glanford Park but the recent year has shown some signs of development at Glanford Park.
A few Iron players that we will have to look out for include Cardiff City loanee “The Beast” Jon Parkin who has already faced the Addicks this season with another loan club, Huddersfield town. He appears to have found his feet at Scunthorpe and will be looking to follow on from the brace he netted against Yeovil Town in their 2-2 draw on Tuesday night.
Another important player for the Iron is Michael O’Connor who always looked the part in the Championship during the past few seasons and the former Northern Irish international can prove to be a real thorn in the side of an opposing team. Although O’Connor has missed the last three games due to suspension I expect the midfielder to rejoin the Iron’s starting line-up on Saturday.
While pacey winger Andy Barcham, who it was rumoured to have turned down a move to the Valley last summer when his contract was up with Gillingham, has been a real threat on the wing this term for Scunny. He has already bagged himself 12 goals in all competitions and is topping Scunthorpe’s charts as things stand.
In the reverse fixture at the Valley, it finished 2-2 with Scunthorpe’s Bobby Grant scoring two goals in the final 20 minutes to secure a point and in doing so became the first team to prevent Charlton winning this season. I was surprised to see that their goal-scorer that day Bobby Grant has been sent out on-loan to Accrington Stanley and so will not be part of the Scunthorpe side on Saturday. Since the game in August, it has not been easy going for the North Lincolnshire side with most of the season spent flirting with relegation, but a recent run of form has seen them rise up to 18th position in League One, six points clear of the drop-zone with ten games remaining so it will not be an easy assignment for Powell’s men.
The main thing for Charlton to do right now is forget about the last week we have witnessed. Every team is allowed an off-week surely, for us it’s come late in the season and thankfully in a position when we could afford a bad week at the office.
Now we must make sure it’s only one poor week because if it does become two we could let our lead slip and soon be sat joint top with Sheffield United. It would be a complete travesty to throw away all of our great work throughout this fantastic season so come on lads hold in there and secure the vital points we need to finally return to the Championship.
