But the biggest turn-off isn’t really the fact that they are delayed so often, but it’s the fact that when there is a delay, we are never given a reason why, or at least, never a good one.
So when you find your train delayed, and you spot your driver playing Football Manager at the front of the train, you’d be forgiven for putting two and two together!
We all know what it’s like to be sitting up at 3am, only two games before a cup final or a huge title decider and you just can’t save and quit when you’re so close to glory. What happens if you’re not warmed up enough next time before the big game? You’d lose. And you can’t bear that kind of disappointment, especially when you were too weak to carry on the night before.
The paradox arises because you believe that you can’t save and quit after a defeat, because that’s bad luck. Neither can you save and quit after a win, because that too could end your winning run when you load up next time! It leaves your body praying for a dull 0-0 draw.
To be fair, though, the delay probably had nothing to do with the fact that the driver was busy living a virtual reality rather than driving a train. It’s not like he was too busy leading his team to glory to lead his passengers to their destination, and it’s probably true that drivers are just as bored as commuters when it comes to train delays, and given he had nothing better to do, then why not load up Football Manager for a short session?
Is it unprofessional? Probably. Is it totally understandable? To anyone who’s ever ruined entire months of their life just by starting up a game in the first place, it is more than understandable, it’s unavoidable!
