da aposte e ganhe: Early September 2016. Nigeria need some magic from somewhere. Who produces it in the second half? A 19-year-old soon-to-be superstar. He goes by the name of Kelechi Iheanacho.Amid all the admiration of Marcus Rashford’s zero-to-hero story late last season, people were unwittinglyÂoverlooking another bright, unstoppable striking force. Iheanacho was producing the goods just across Manchester and he was doing it, like Rashford, in his formative years. A late winner at Crystal Palace was probably the highlight of a breakthrough season that was, or seemed to be, not noticedÂby many.It has continued on into this season, as well. His late cameo away at Stoke City was breath-taking and showed a side of his game that we have not had as much opportunity to enjoy. A player who can jink past defenders as well as he can finish will always be a danger, a potent threat in the opposition’s final third. His all-round game will only get better under the careful stewardship of Pep Guardiola, too.The Nigerian is likely to have his big shot at glory early this season in the Manchester derby. Sergio Aguero’s consistent injury struggles are a blessing for Iheanacho, of course, but this suspension is an extra treat. It’s an opportunity for the entire footballing world to see what this teenage star can do, and he will be judged as much for what he does to help the team as he will by his goal contribution. That being said, there aren’t exactly any concerns over Iheanacho’s ability to finish a chance.
The lack of attention, the reducedÂpressure, should do Iheanacho the world of good in terms of his development. As he continues along this trajectory to become one of the best in the world, growing up in England may oddly be the best for him.
He will not attract the same overblown press of an English counterpart, nor will he suffer the curse of premature national team pressure. All of this whilst learning from Aguero and Pep Guardiola, Iheanacho is in the right place. Competition for places with City’s recently-recruitedÂgifted young forwards can only be a positive thing, too. Although he may want to occupy a lone striking berth later in his career, Guardiola’s need for him to fill in a wider role will certainly help the Nigerian to develop as a player in possession.
The world is at Iheanacho’s feet. The only way is up and, as the Manchester derby approaches, City could have themselves a brand new hero.
