da dobrowin: Everton manager Ronald Koeman has claimed that Ross Barkley could stay at the club, despite numerous times stating that the midfielder was on his way out the door, reports the Daily Mail.
What’s the word?
da 888casino: Towards the end of last season, it became clear that Barkley no longer had a future at Everton.
As recent as July, Koeman reiterated to the media that he expected the England international to be sold this summer after failing to agree on a new contract.
Tottenham Hotspur have been the front-runners for his signature, but the price tag seemed to be the sticking point.
The Telegraph recently claimed that Spurs value Barkley at around £25m due to Koeman’s willingness to sell him and the fact that he has just one year left on his contract, but Everton are holding out for £50m.
The Toffees boss has confirmed that the club have not received any bids for Barkley, meaning that he could still be on the blue half of Merseyside this season.
The Daily Mail quotes Koeman as saying:
“There is no offer on the table for Ross. That means he will stay at Everton now. What happens in the coming weeks, I don’t know. If there is an offer, maybe the club will not accept. He is a really good player; a young player, an English player.”
Could a turnaround work out?
From Everton’s point of view, having Barkley in the squad is a plus, but for the player, it could be a step backwards.
It is fair to suggest that Koeman has been planning for the season without Barkley in mind.
It seemed that it was only a matter of time before the midfielder moved on, but nothing has materialised.
It has been proven before that players can successfully perform U-turns and get back into the team; David de Gea’s collapsed move to Real Madrid is one example.
However, in this case, it would not be beneficial for Barkley as he is unlikely to get much playing time.
Koeman has already bought Davy Klaassen and he is confident of sealing Gylfi Sigurdsson’s signature, so it is difficult to see where Barkley would fit in.
If the 23-year-old wants to take the next step in his career, then he needs to be playing regularly to have a chance of joining a ‘bigger’ club.
